A brief history of Hellas (Greece) and Cyprus

The International bibliography of works on the long history of the Greek Nation, from mythological and prehistoric times up to the present day, is certainly extensive. All aspects of life, Greek culture, the fine arts, poetry, theatre, philosophy and science, have been fully dealt with within the framework of the political life of the Nation. Researchers studying the subject in depth and consequently able to devote much time to their studies, may find a great number and variety of books, more or less voluminous.

On the other hand, the amateurs, the simple readers, the future visitors or tourists, who have not much available time for detailed study, cannot easily find a brief history of Greece. Hence, the present short review is intended to fill up the gap.

However, this study has another object, described in the second part. It is a brief survey of the pending Cyprus issue, involving the principles of equal rights and self-determination of the Cypriots.

The most important historical events, connected with the island of Cyprus, are given as part of the short summary of Greek History outlined in the first and second part.

Finally, the third part of the study is devoted to general ideas, bearing directly or indirectly, on the Cyprus issue.

The mountains look on Marathon-
and Marathon looks on the sea;
And musing there an hour alone
I dream'd that Greece might still be free.
